In celebration of Black History Month, the Ear Candy Update intends to celebrate landmark recordings by black artists that have shaped the collective consciousness, mentality, and sense of cool the world over. Next, the full podcast.
There’s no conceivable way I could encapsulate the spectrum
of black music. It’s just not real. Now I can’t and won’t speak for everyone,
so I’ll speak for myself here. I’m gonna play the hell out of my Prince and Pac
records. I’m gonna celebrate everyday people, and like Jimi told me, I’m gonna
let my freak flag fly. Black was never an adjective and I know that in my
bones. Until the rest of my nation understands that in the hearts they pray and
feel with, I’ll be here with my records exercising the fuck out my white
privilege doing what I do. Nothing moves me quite like this music, and I long
for a day when no one will have to call it black music, or black literature,
or black culture. One day we’ll understand that as a nation, and then we might
have a different anthem to sing…
